The Shack
The Shack Recovery Island
The Shack includes 58L compartments allowing for the sorting of recyclable materials, organic matter and waste.
MATERIAL – The Shack is designed and manufactured in Quebec. The product is made in the Formétal training factory, whose mission is to reintegrate young people who have dropped out of school into society and the workforce. Made of sheet steel with 50% recycled content and recyclable at the end of its life, finished with electrostatic paint (baked-on paint) for high durability, The Shack has a hinged lid that opens from the top for easy bag unloading. The available openings are square. The bin uses 11-gauge steel, except for the bottom, which is also 11-gauge. Standard colors are black, brown, steel gray, and white (other colors are available upon request).
A Mobilia base is placed at the bottom of the module to keep the 3 plastic liners of 58 litres (23 US gal) securely in place.
26″ x 36″ bags can be used inside each of the liners, which have a raised edge at the top and are made of plastic with 35% recycled content. Two guides attached to the bottom make it easy to insert them properly into the compartment.
DIMENSIONS – The external dimensions of one module are 83.82 cm or 33″ (width) × 38.1 cm or 15″ (depth) × 76.2 cm or 30″ (height).
CASTERS – The quiet 2″ diameter rubber casters allow the unit to be easily moved, even when filled with materials.
DISPLAY (optional) – For display purposes, the use of 3M vinyl stickers with a Teflon finish allows for easy poster changes as needed. The adhesive used is suitable for metal and electrostatic paint, making the stickers just difficult enough to remove (preventing damage by users), while still allowing for their removal if they need to be changed.
This type of sticker and adhesive has proven effective on the bins in the Montreal metro, where passengers might be tempted to tear off the sticker. Experience shows that removal is too difficult, discouraging passengers, but still manageable for the team responsible for replacing the signs.
Vinyl stickers are coated with Teflon to ensure durability and prevent wear. The vinyl makes the stickers difficult to tear and easy to clean.
